Successfully developed occupational standards, qualifications and educational programs in the field of video game development

Within the project "Development of professional standards, qualifications, curriculum and teaching materials for the profession Video game development specialist and training programs in the field of video game development, modernization of the curriculum and development of teaching materials for the profession Video game development technician and implementation of training programs for adult education" carried out in within the framework of the "Regional Center of Competence in Sisak-Moslavina County – towards new and innovative knowledge and skills", 5 occupational standards, qualification standards and educational programs in the field of video game development were developed and approved.

The project was realized through the project activities of several partners: Faculty of Organization and Informatics, Algebra, Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing and Academy of Dramatic Arts. The head of the project team at the Faculty of Organization and Informatics was Assoc. Prof. Mario Konecki, Ph.D. and the project activities were carried out within the Laboratory for the Design of Program Interfaces, Internet Services and Video Games. Other members of the Laboratory also participated in the project: Assist. Prof. Mladen Konecki, Ph.D. Jerry John Antolos, M. Inf. and others. The budget of the project, financed from the European Social Fund, is slightly more than 1.100.000,00 EUR and the project lasted from October 2021 to December 2023. In January 2024, the last standard of qualification was approved, making the project a formal and substantive success.

The video game industry is growing extremely fast and the value of this industry has exceeded 280 billion dollars in 2024, which is more than the value of the film and music industries combined. The possibilities of application of video game technology are various, and the possibility of wide application of virtual and augmented reality in combination with artificial intelligence is particularly significant. Technology of this type can be used for business needs, but also for the needs of wider social application (health, trade, service activities, communication, tourism, architecture, education, etc.).

Considering the importance of these technologies and the upcoming trends, it is of great importance to educate experts who will be able to follow such development directions, and in this sense, the development of educational capacities is one of the key factors, and the results of the mentioned project contribute to this.

The results of the project include:

  • 5 occupational standards, qualifications and educational programs, including a modernized version of the "Video Game Development Technician" high school educational program
  • 26 textbooks and manuals in the field of video game development
  • Tens of thousands of slides accompanying the content of textbooks and manuals
  • More than 100 educational content based on virtual or augmented reality that accompany the content of textbooks and manuals
  • 6 extensive trainings in the field of video game development held
  • Experimental implementation of the created programs of lifelong education held

This project is part of a wider initiative of the Sisak-Moslavina County in the field of strengthening the capacity of the video game industry and related education.

The next stage of this initiative includes the construction of the Gaming Industry Center, whose 3D model was presented to the general public in January 2024, and which, in addition to entrepreneurial capacities, will also include a component of higher education in this propulsive area.
