DIGITAsia project kick-off

DIGITAsia Kick-off
From February 12 to 14, 2025, the kick-off meeting of the Erasmus+ project DIGITAsia – Digital Transformation of Asian Higher Education was held at the partner institutions in Sri Lanka, coordinated by the University of Zagreb Faculty of Organization and Informatics (FOI) under the leadership of Prof. Igor Balaban, Ph. D.

This three-year project will be implemented until October 31, 2027 and is financed with the amount of 719,634 euros with the main goal to improve the education systems in the Maldives, Sri Lanka and Malaysia through digital transformation and the application of Education 5.0.

Among other things, the project team plans to create an educational program that will be attended by 150 higher education teachers from 7 Asian higher education institutions who will create 130 hybrid courses. The project also promotes the creation of a sustainable framework for digital transformation, inter-institutional cooperation and knowledge exchange through national events and education programs.

During the three-day meeting, the partners actively participated in the analysis of the work packages, the administrative aspects of the project and the elaboration of the education plan, which is crucial for teacher training. The second day was devoted to the design of a module for teacher training with an emphasis on the development of innovative approaches in teaching. The third day focused on creating a digital transformation framework that will serve as a foundation for long-term changes in the higher education systems of partner countries, ensuring their adaptation to contemporary digital challenges.

We remind you that the DIGITAsia project is a continuation of the successfully implemented Erasmus+ project AMED - Advancing Higher Education in Maldives Through E-learning Development. Through the AMED project, FOI introduced a complete e-learning system at the Maldives National University, creating the foundation for further digital transformation that is now being continued and enhanced by the DIGITAsia project.

Project manager, Prof. Igor Balaban, Ph. D. (FOI), pointed out:

For the second time, we are extremely pleased to be the coordinator of a project that aims to improve higher education institutions in Asian countries, transferring the expertise of experts from Croatia and Spain.

Out of a total of 9 project partners, in addition to FOI, as the coordinating institution, and Open University of Catalonia (Spain), as two European institutions that transfer their knowledge, 7 Asian partner institutions also participate in the project: Maldives National University, Islamic University of Maldives and Villa College (Maldives), SLT Campus and University of Peradeniya (Sri Lanka), Universiti Teknologi Malaysia and Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (Malaysia).

Three more on-site meetings are planned as part of the project: two consortium meetings in the Maldives and in Spain, and a final meeting and conference in Malaysia, where the achievements and long-term results of the project will be presented in the fall of 2027.
